Cardio based exercises are one of the best ways to help start your healthier lifestyle as they can be adapted for any age or ability! Whilst cardio based exercises have the added benefits of feeling fitter, they also aid sleep, help relieve stress and contributes to weight loss.

And it all starts with just a few simple steps (if you pardon the pun)…

Choose an activity that you enjoy

There are so many different forms of cardio, it doesn’t have to be something scary that you feel you should be doing, it should be something you enjoy and want to be doing, that way you’re more likely to stick to it! Start off with evening steps, get out of the house and go for a short walk, maybe up the pace to something a little less ‘comfortable’ during your walk, even if it’s just for a few minutes! If you are consistent, over time you will fid that your ability will start to change and you will find it easier.

If you feel extra tired or sore one day, then take a recovery day to rest and repair. Taking a day off doesn’t mean you’re failing, it just means you’re listening to your body and taking care of it, ready to power on the next day.

Be sure to warm-up and cool-down

Get your body warmed up and ready for it’s cardio based workout. Start with some simple stretches 5-10 minutes increasing your heart rate gradually, and preparing your body and muscles for the workout you’re about to do. It’s also helps get you in the right mindset and prevents any potential injury.

Similarly, slow your heart rate down by working on a cool-down. Stretching your muscles while they’re still warm can help reduce lactic acid build up, reducing the chance of cramp and stiffness the next morning!
